MENU FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 9, 2010

The food plan this week got a little out of order as did Warner’s stomach.  We reverted to that wonder drug of comfort food – lemon roasted chicken.  That gave us one lovely meal and provided enough chicken meat for a mild but lovely chicken pasta salad by Jean Georges.  And now we are back up to steam, or I guess I should say, full steam ahead . We did chicken again on Sunday – that wonderful Tuscan Chicken Grilled Under a Brick with good olive oil and fresh herbs. Wonderful and classic and will morph into a chicken salad with gorgonzola on Weds.

It is great week when both lobster and flank steaks are on sale – intend use both in this menu. It is so easy to get these salads done early in the day (when they should be done) and then be able to haul them out, along with the protein for the grill, just before service. It is stress free and enables us to keep the house cool. And with Con Edison/Orange and Rockland requesting (which of course they will rubber stamp approve!) 12% rate hikes, we need things ways of working that don’t jack up their profits.  (Still haven’t gotten an answer to what happened to all that extra cash as their gas rates remained the same for the last year, but their costs plummeted by at least half.)  They got to have some great executive bonus plans there….

This week we did a field trip to the Indian section of Manhattan (Lexington Ave in the 28th St area Kalustans  ).  Wonderful shops with the rich aromas of the spice trade.  And spices of every calling, along with rices, flours and all such essentials.  I picked up two interesting looking fry pans that are actually flat.  I’m guessing they are intended for use for flat breads – which I’d like to try.

I have done poori before and I love that. So I’ll make a try on that on Sat. along with a Pork Vindaloo which I’ve done before.  We’ll test the principle that warm, spicy Indian cooking keeps one cool during the warmer months….Then it will be back to the grill….
