MENU FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 24, 2010
Lolly made a remark on this blog about women who over
do it in search of eternal youth/beauty.
It reminded me of something that happened a lot of years ago. I was then working for the publisher
Doubleday and we had just published a book called No Pickle, No
Performance. The author, Harold J. Kennedy was a
director of some note.
We celebrated with a book party at the suite Doubleday
maintained for such purposes. Many
famous names attended – major stars of a generation ago. Steve Allen, Jayne
Meadows, I think Ethel Merman. There was a great deal of red hair not often
seen in nature, flashy jewelry, overstated makeup –etc. All
Her hair was gray.
She wore no flashy jewelry. She
was smartly dressed in a tailored fashion.
Her hair was in a bun. She had a
fabulous smile and an aura of grace and intelligence. This was glamour at its most fabulous. She
out shone every other woman in the room.
She was Helen Hayes.
I have never forgotten that. She was herself – a
beautiful, intelligent woman of a certain age and she carried it
beautifully. She made every other woman
in the room look twice her age!
This week is Memorial Day for most people. Warner’s weekend this week is Thurs and Friday, so we will celebrate accordingly. The Lobster Pack is so simple to grill. Per person: 1small lobster, 1 ear of corn in 3 pieces, red potato (par boiled), mussels, steamers, kielbasa – wing the amounts. Put the lobsters in the freezer for 20 minutes prior to cooking. Wrap the ingredients up in heavy duty foil –adding a small bay leaf and a little white wine. Put on the grill at about 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. Serve in the packs with melted butter on the side. A fabulous, simple summer dinner - only limited by the amount of grill space one has available.
